How can one increase the water level in a well that dries out in summer? There is a method that gives good results. You can increase the water level in the well, preventing it from drying up even in the worst summer. Your water needs can thus be taken care of. Just read on to know more.
My house is on top of a small hill. The well in our compound is very deep, somewhat 82 feet (nearly 25 meters). One cannot think of drawing water from it using a bucket and rope. Earlier we were using a jet pump of
1.5 HP to pump water from it. Jet pumps, as you know, are not at all energy efficient. It was taking a lot of time to fill our over head tank, thus increasing our electricity charges. So, I decided to install a submersible pump instead. I installed a 1HP submersible pump which performed much better than the jet pump. Apart from that, there was a saving of 0.5 HP on the motor rating which definitely saved a lot of electricity. But still there was a problem. At the peak of the summer every year, the water level in the well became so low, that pumping was impossible.
The public water supply system in our area was not efficient. So, we could not depend on it. What could I do? I was clueless.
One day I happened to read an article in a magazine. It was the story of a person who succeeded in raising the level of water in his well with a simple method. What he did was as explained below.
He also was having a problem similar to that of mine. The well in his property used to get dry in summer, resulting in water shortage. He found out a solution. He dug small pits all over his land so that rain water got collected in them and seeped down into the earth. After two years, the water
level in his well rose considerably. It reached 5 feet even at the peak of summer. After that he never ever had to face water scarcity.Getting inspired by this story, I decided to use rain water to enrich the well in our compound. I adopted a slightly different method. I got a pit dug near the well, some 2 meters from it. It was 5 feet (1.5 meters) in diameter and 10 feet (3 meters) in depth. When it was being dug I found that it was loose soil down to 4 feet from ground level and then laterite further down. To avoid caving in of loose soil into the pit, concrete well rings were inserted down to 4 feet from ground level.
Then PVC channels were run through the entire periphery of the roof of our house to collect all the rain water that would fell on the roof. PVC pipes were connected to the channels to take the rain water down. The rain water thus collected was drained into the pit. Since the pit was near the well, I was sure the rain water seeping down into the earth from the pit would increase the level of water in the well. Everything turned out to be as expected and from the next year, the water level in the well increased considerably. Now, there is sufficient water in the well even in the peak of summer.
You can also try this method, if you are facing the problem of your well getting dried up in summer. It is quite easy and efficient. So, give it a try.
